I have no idea if this has been posted, but it is another great series by Brave New Films:
***Graphic Warning***
It is possible scenes in these videos could lead to trigger memories so if you believe this may be possible I 'advise against watch them.

(1,615 posts)he was having a psychotic episode and they started beating up on him and he fought back like any rational person would. and then they escalated it, just like you saw in that sandra bland video.
WHAT THE FUCK
they do it cos they can get away with it, say someone's crazy and suddenly they're an unreliable witness and no one will believe them ever.
the stats back this up too, disabled people, esp those with mental illness have a far higher rate of victimization than general population.
I hate cops, I know what they do.

(3,186 posts)Otherwise, a good, informative video. And I like that you added a link for the petition.

(1,884 posts)Why do they do that? What's the music for on something like this anyway?
They would get a better response if they would turn down the background music so it really was the background, instead of the dialog being the background.

(22,000 posts)You might try that. The link is the one down at the bottom. All three videos are on the same page.

(1,884 posts)Both places have the same video and audio. The problem is the beat in the music drives my hearing aids AGC to cut the level of the sound so far down I can't hear the talking. Without my hearing aids, the music just distracts too much or covers over the talking.
The videos were very informative in that they had both people who had been in prison and many advocates that are trying to improve the way people with mental health are treated both inside prison and after they are released.
On edit: I just tried the captioning and it isn't that bad. You might turn the caption on and the sound down.

(11,012 posts)handicaps.
He began learning to communicate beyond a first grade level at age 16. It took him another ten more years to get to about a sixth grade level.
He is sitting in prison doing fifteen years for something that happened twelve years before he was arrested. He was determined to be incompetent to stand trial after he was arrested. But the court system sent him off to a mental institution to be "restored to mental competence." (How is it possible to be restored to something one has never been before?) (The offence he was charged with took place when his mental age level was about that of a socially delayed five year old.)
The level for competence in a criminal trial is incredibly low. All one has to do to be considered "competent to stand trial" is to be able to recite in very simple terms, when asked, what are the jobs of the judge, the prosecuting attorney, the defense attorney, and the the jury. Legally, one is also supposed to be able to aid in one's own defense, but the courts don't think that one is important enough to consider.
People with developmental and mental health issues are often given longer and harsher sentences than people who knowingly commit crimes.
The criminal justice system in this country is not just broken. It is sick and depraved.
