BBC documentary "The Power of Nightmares" shows how neocons and Islamist radicals enhance

each other's power. The media gets a boost as well since they also rely on fear of unknowns to position themselves as useful and trustworthy despite their track record on Iraq, the 2000 elections, the legitimacy of GWB, etc.

The multi part doc traces the history of modern day radical Islam but the first 3 minutes summarize the dynamic very well.
