I never heard about this before now.

I will say that there are dozens and dozens of schools named after Horace Mann, as he was a champion of the concept of public schools.

2. We studied Horace Mann and other early US folks pushing for

public schools. He would turn over in his grave. He -and others--Catherine Beecher Stowe, as an example, also pushed for 'normal schools"--the early fore-runners of Teacher Education programs in the US.
