Fox contributor and National Review columnist (and Fox News New Years Eve celebration cohost) Katherine Timpf argued on Fox and Friends Saturday that under the new Twitter abusive behavior policy, conservatives with unpopular opinions could be silenced on the social media platform.
The promoted goals of the changes from the company are intended to target the social media practices of suspected terrorists who use the platform for communication; Timpf and her Fox cohorts arent so sold that others wouldnt be silenced as well.
In a blog post published this week, Twitter said:
The updated language emphasizes that Twitter will not tolerate behavior intended to harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence another users voice. As always, we embrace and encourage diverse opinions and beliefs but we will continue to take action on accounts that cross the line into abuse.
People say horrible things! said Timpf on the subject of peoples free speech on Twitter, but cautioned that the new changes could be used against viewpoints that run counter to mainstream liberalism.
Fox News Tucker Carlson agree, adding, But people have been silenced, and it seems to me, a lot of them are conservatives! He proceeded to share a pre-made graphic revealing various accounts that have been suspended on Twitter, including that belonging to the husband of radio host Dana Loesch.
Timpf continued her case, noting, I dont hear any liberals complain about getting banned on Twitter for something theyve said and I hear every day about this happening to conservatives.
As part of the new policy, Twitter continued, You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease.

(182,877 posts)It was a few years ago but there were a series of stories about elected officials being caught in lies about serving in the military. Mostly related to Vietnam and a few who claimed to have serve in the first Gulf War. Fox had a campaign to defend their right (these were both Dems and Repubs) which was telling. Their whole a thick is to lie and attack so they have to defend against punishment.

(564 posts)Lots of countries have laws regarding speech, and they generally get along just fine.
Not a single conservative gave a shit about Free Speech until January 2009, and were perfectly happy, and still are, to suppress speech they don't like and agree with.

(115,836 posts)they are probably right. Twitter says you may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease," but that's what they do. So, yeah, Twitter is limiting their speech. Too fucking bad.

(1,325 posts)Thank you Wally! The "free speech" issue only pertains to our govt. quelling or allowing speech that some may find offensive. If you are working for company XYZ or using a service provided by company ABC your speech can and will be limited. Duh
BTW - the term "Vanilla Isis" used for describing the idiots taking over a Park Service bldg. in Oregon should be disseminated as widely and as often as possible. Just saying.

(6,699 posts)This doesn't surprise me one bit. The pathetic rag of a propaganda network is willing to grab any dim witted blond bimbo, eg mcCains dunce, to come on and cry foul to the "librul mainstream media".
Their regulars are labeled as idiots, so now they troll for fresh, unintelligent faces to take a paycheck to push their agenda.
Network of losers and whiners.

(12,821 posts)... might be a conservative.
Sometimes when people tell you you're being abusive, it's not liberalism, censorship, or bias -- you just really are being abusive.
Maybe conservatives should actually stop and listen to what they're saying and how they're saying it, rather than getting their knickers in a twist because good people keep telling them to be civil.
Leave it to conservatives to think the problem is that people keep telling them not to be assholes, rather than the problem being that... they're assholes.
And anyhow, Twitter ain't the government; if they silence your abusive rants... ignorant fearmongering... "conservative speech," it's not a violation of Free Speech.
