David Selig, Conservative Commentator vs. Thom Hartmann. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban sugary drinks from being sold in that city - as part of his fight against obesity in New York. But should the government have the ability to tell you and me what we can and cannot buy?

(3,894 posts)Back in the day when things were made with sugar, the 50's and so on, obesity and diabetes wasn't an issue, and for those of us that still intake SUGAR, it still isn't. It's the HFCS and the generally sedentary life style of most citizens. Not sugar, that's not what's infesting our diets, it's HFCS.

(263 posts)but I do believe things like fake sugar andHigh-fructose corn syrup and unnatural sugars that need to be regulated.
I am allergic to Aspartame. I break out in jitters and I get itchy like crazy not to mention I act weird when I ingest the stuff.
I am over weight as well. So a friend who is a nutritionist has me on a diet on a diet that allows regular sugar and since I can't do diet pop she has worked in 2 glasses of kool-aid in the diet and I loose on average about 5 to 6 lbs a week.
My legs haven't swollen up since being off the pepsi and Fructose stuff.

(6,890 posts)Actually corn and soybeans are HIGHLY subsidized by the government. Which is why burgers, soda, and processed foods are cheap. In most countries meat costs much more than vegetables because it not subsidized. End the subsidies and there may not be a need for that taxation. But getting either side to touch those subsidies would be a political hot potato.
