Ted Cruz often touts his religious cred on the campaign trail, but a new report indicates that he doesnt follow a key part of his Christian faith. According to the Bible you are supposed to tithe 10% of your income to the church to benefit the poor. Cruz donates much less than that. Cenk Uygur host of The Young Turks breaks it down.
Do you think this will hurt Cruzs chances with Evangelical Christians? Let us know in the comments below.

If youre not much of a church-goer, then the word tithing probably sounds like a cockney guy with a lisp getting ready to taze you, but in the evangelical circles where Ted Cruz hopes to find his advantage in Iowa, it is an Old Testament guideline that sets the level of an individuals charitable giving at ten percent of their income. That custom has now become part of the Republican presidential campaign.
I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian church, so I can attest to the fact that tithing is really important to some pastors, but most Christians wouldnt judge someone on this standard because even the churchiest among us gives the side-eye to this convenient bit of New Testament-ignoring self-service, and are more inclined to heed the two Corinthians on this: Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

(5,946 posts)tithing was really important in the Catholic church. My grandmother used to attend church until the local priest demanded she tithe during the depression, she had small children and refused, they barely had enough to eat. The local priest than told her she and her whole family were excommunicated (probably did not do the paperwork, but hey if the priest said it, it must be true). She never attended church again. I don't know a single person who tithes in any church.

(5,668 posts).... 1. if it's in the New Testament and 2. how Conservative the church is. Most of the ones in the Upper Midwest aren't that conservative. maybe upper MN but not in the general population.

Cruz preaches for everyone to give their income to his, Merchant Church, as he is, The One, that can run the World economy while being seated at the top of the Seven Hills. The when Jesus returns, they are supposed to turn it all over to Him. Cruz is lying to us because he forgot to tell you about The Tribulation, 7 1/2 years of world crisis that Cruz would be the head off. What a lying lunatic.
