(2,212 posts)If we can avoid blowing ourselves up or otherwise destroying ourselves before it becomes operational (crossing fingers), it will be one more entry in the column of "Good Stuff Humans Have Accomplished." I expect the images it returns to have a significant impact on the direction of human thought and philosophy, in much the same way that the first NASA images from the Moon of the Earth have helped to foster the environmental movement and a sense of global consciousness.
Thanks for the video, Yui.

(12,882 posts)if an extraterrestrial exploratory vessel were to trip upon this thing (it and Hubble and other such craft) and wonder as to it's creators - what would it say about the devastated planet they all seemed tied to? What would they think of a planet where things had been made SO inhospitable for life that all such had expired - when they clearly (evidenced by these incredible discovery tools) had the know how to avert their own fate?
How very, very sad to think that the voo-doo shit of religions and the petty hatreds of racism and inequality impede the significant talents of human ingenuity and vision. So MUCH could be done to expand our understanding of the universe and our TRUE place in it if we weren't so stupidly focused on having the edge for killing one another and burning every last drop of carbon-spewing fuel. IF we are a creation of some supreme power, we're proof of their ineptitude.
