(3,894 posts)the narrator does an excellent job of displaying how the world looks at us these days.
Both are entirely humiliiating, I have no idea how anyone can ever claim pride in USA or claim exceptionalism of any value, any more we only exceed in acts of irrational violence and the suppression of civil rights.

(12,814 posts)We were #1 once, and we earned the respect of the world.
Now it seems we spend more time reminding others that "we're #1" instead of actually being #1, resting on our laurels like a has-been celebrity screaming at the maitre d, "Don't you know who I am?!"
Blind nationalism and loyalism isn't the same thing as patriotism.
I saw a comment somewhere that compared the whole "we're #1 no matter what" craze to the insane cheering of rabid football fans. To so many conservatives, it's like politics is just a game to be won, and our country is the football.

(12,882 posts)"A microcosm of America's foreign policy" Sho nuff! It's also a condensed version of domestic law enforcement. Some poor shluck bringin' his mom home from work, so they both get tortured. Meanwhile, Wall St. moguls grab vaultfuls of taxpayer dollars, evict hard-working sorts from their homes and cause WHO KNOWS how many suicides and alcoholics - and they're treated to bonuses.

(32,723 posts)I do.
It wasn't that long ago either.
It was back in the days when shows like "Adam 12" and "C.H.I.P.s" was on the air. Those shows attracted college students to join the force that had the two qualities Carlin talked about - Intelligence and decency.
Now the big show is called C.O.P.S. where poor people are slammed to the ground. That show attracts a bunch of thugs from the high school wrestling team.
We need to deprogram our cops to stop believing "it's a war zone out there".
It's not.
It's a neighborhood.

(5,364 posts)He was not in any way rude or flippant. In short, he was behaving like a citizen should when confronted by "the man", and not some timid being spewing an unending succession of "Yes sirs".

(8,244 posts)These cops should be fired. This guy and the mom should get big fat cash settlements. It won't happen though.
