#AskROF: You said DNC was doing nothing regarding voter suppression but why? High turnout is good for Democrats, because it is good for Bernie.

(67,112 posts)voting democratic by the candidate, but I don't want the DNC/DLC/DWS to think I'm one of their captured herd. And, I feel much better. Political parties in this country are an absolute mess. And, unaffiliated/independent are the majority in the US, and growing and growing.

They're also the ones at the center of party power.

Once it is Hillary against any GOPer the oligarchs have won no matter who is actually elected.
So voter suppression can only help them.

(18,998 posts)And large numbers of people voting is too unpredictable and hard to control.
Better to have small numbers of people they can count on to vote the right way...the way their emotions created by the TV soap opera propaganda leads them.

(10,279 posts)will replace her with someone who will form the committee into a team and address the problem of recruiting and registering new members of the party. But, for now, the system is optimized to operate for the election of Hillary. New members, esp. the young, support Bernie, and that's not good for Hillary. If Hillary wins the DEM nomination, the DNC will begin a frantic registration of young Democrats. If Bernie win the nomination, well, he is on his own. No help from this DNC.

All they have to do is consult with their "esteemed colleagues across the aisle."
After all, the Republicans practically wrote the book on voter suppression.

have a Republican like Kasich than Bernie. By restoring the Democratic party to its FDR roots, he's really not wanted.
Somehow they seems to think a depressed Dem turnout will still result in an HRC win? But in any eventthe risk is worth defeating Bernie.

(950 posts)(Now we are beginning to realize that Bernie's database has been hacked and used in MANY states to alter voter registration. But the following article is still pertinent)
Was New York's Voter Registration Data Hacked and Changed Like Arizona ?
"One of the more disturbing allegations made on the Heavy article by an anonymous poster was that the databases for people to access voter registration and to be able to change party affiliations is run by NGP VAN. NGP VAN was the company at the center of the controversy last December about the lack of security in the DNC databases that allowed Bernie Sanders staffers to access some of Hillary Clintons data. The company is headed by one of Bill Clintons former staffers, Stu Trevelyan, and one of the employees is the nephew of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the DNC chairwoman who has sparked outrage over allegations of trying to game the election for Clinton."
My comment:
So... the same company manages BOTH databases. Not too difficult to pick out Bernie supporters and purge their registrations. I wonder how many OTHER states this has happened in. NO WONDER Bernie does better in caucus states !

(1,890 posts)I'm not sure if this has already been posted at DU but I just ran across this video of the AZ Sec. of State confirming that registrations were changed in AZ (someone in her own office had theirs changed). They are cross checking all provisional ballots. The video was posted 3 days ago so this may be old news here?

(145,433 posts)I volunteered with the DNC voter expansion project in 2014 on voter id in Texas. We trained voter id assistants and got around 300 people ids. The DNC paid for one full time staffer who headed up program and I drafted and did the training materials for the project
We lack the resources to do more.

(145,433 posts)This lawsuit is currently on en banc appeal to the 5th Circuit but the DOJ did a ton of valuable work in this case http://abcnews.go.com/ABC_Univision/Politics/department-justice-sues-texas-voter-id-law/story?id=20037384
The lawsuit will challenge the law under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color or language. Texas moved swiftly to implement its voter ID law after the Supreme Court in June struck down a requirement that states with a history of racial discrimination seek permission from the federal government to change their voting laws.
Texas was subject to that process, known as preclearance.
Todays action marks another step forward in the Justice Departments continuing effort to protect the voting rights of all eligible Americans, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. We will not allow the Supreme Courts recent decision to be interpreted as open season for states to pursue measures that suppress voting rights.

(145,433 posts)Marc Elias, the chief counsel for the Clinton Victory Counsel program, is busy suing the GOP and fighting GOP vote suppression http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/16/voting-rights-lawsuits-_n_7594960.html
The attorney, Marc Elias, is involved in lawsuits challenging measures passed in Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin, arguing that laws cutting back early voting, restricting registration and requiring photo identification to vote, among other measures, disproportionately impact racial minorities.
Conservatives have argued such measures protect against voter fraud, and have called the lawsuits a political effort to energize Democratic voters. The financial involvement of the billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros, who is supporting the suits, has only incensed them further.
There are high stakes to the lawsuits, as the Supreme Court displayed a certain skepticism about federal voting rights legislation when it struck down a key section of the landmark Voting Rights Act in 2013. That provision had required states and localities with a history of voting discrimination to first clear any changes to their voting laws with the federal government or in federal court. The VRA still bars voting procedures that discriminate against racial minorities, but the strength of that section hasnt been tested since the courts controversial decision two years ago.
So, while the politics of Elias cases have attracted most of the attention Clinton recently decried measures supported by Republican governors, like fellow presidential hopeful Scott Walker of Wisconsin there is an equivalent amount of intrigue on the legal side. Some of the provisions targeted in the lawsuits, like Wisconsins voter identification law, have already been challenged, while others, like Virginias photo ID law, havent yet seen the inside of a courtroom.
The GOP is very good at voter suppression and I am glad that Marc is fighting against the GOP. Unfortunately, the Wisconsin voer id law will be in effect for Tuesday primary.

(145,433 posts)As noted above, the DOJ sued Texas on the voter id law. Even though 7 federal judges have ruled against the Texas voter id law, we were stuck with in during the March 1 Texas primary. The DOJ and the Texas Party tried to get the 5th circuit to rule on this law before the primary but the court ignored their filings. See http://moritzlaw.osu.edu/electionlaw/litigation/documents/SupplementalAuthoritiesFiledbyAppelleesMsImaniClarkandTexasLeagueofYoungVotersEducationFund1.pdf
Right now, the DOJ and the private plaintiffs are asking the SCOTUS to lift the stay of the Cir See
http://moritzlaw.osu.edu/electionlaw/litigation/documents/Veasey-ApplicationToVacateStay03252016.pdf In addition to the DOJ, one of the lead plaintiff attorneys, Chad Dunn, also happens to be the Texas Democratic Party outside counsel (Chad is representing Congressman Marc Veasey in this case)
It is not that easy to fight voter suppression
