I predicted to friends that he would then return to the senate, believing that he could take up where he left off. He went back thinking that he could again become the "maverick" reformer, beloved of the press. But, the only reason the press slobbered over him was that he was willing to stab his own party in the back from time to time.
Also behind the press attention was the idea that he might actually one day be president. Well, that ended in 2008. Now, he is a comparative nobody; just another senator now, trying to garner attention and praise from the media again. Sad, but a little funny, too.
