6. My Dan Quayle story

In October 1989, my city was hit with a 7.1 earthquake. The day after we went through our neighborhood that was really hit hard. The fires had been put out, leaving stench, water and steam rising up from the skeletons of the buildings.

The garage doors were skewed left and right. The 4th floor of a large apartment building was sitting in the street. The rest of the building had pancaked. Building after building, street after street disaster everywhere.

Some of people we saw were wandering about in a daze, having been told that they had lost everything.

It made your heart hurt.

Then out of all of this, I see a couple smiling and waving as they made their way through the devastation. It was Dan and Marilyn Quayle. Clueless as to the misery all around.

They din't stop and ask anyone if they could help. They just kept smiling and waving.
