Congress has passed legislation that would allow the families of 9/11 victims to hold the country accountable for those atrocities. But President Obama has said hell veto the legislation, which means hes willing to risk his reputation protecting one of the most oppressive countries in the world. Ring of Fires Farron Cousins discusses this.

(3,343 posts)Because if we allowed it then every other country's citizens wronged by America would sue us... And believe me we have a LOT more to lose than Saudi Arabia.
Sucks but it's true.

(3,343 posts)it usually is... but it's not this time... the idea here is that is a country/government - in this case Saudi Arabia - kills and injures civilians - in this case Americans - the civilians can sue the foreign government.
Imagine if everyone hurt by American troops or the American government around the world could sue America... America would go broke in a couple of months...
So Americans hurt by Saudi Arabia just have to suck it up, because US foreign policy - somewhat ironically funded by some of the very people trying to sue Saudi Arabia - is too toxic and has hurt and killed too many people for them to ever get justice.

No I think it boils down to money/oil...the Saudis have large investments in commercial as well as politicians and the US and we need their oil. The Bush family has had connections with them for decades.

(57,936 posts)government (and the Saudi Arabian individuals in question were), it would be considered an act of war.
But somehow, we did not consider it an act of war. It needs to be investigated thoroughly and not just the role of the Saudi Arabians. There is something very odd about how our governments, both the Bush and Obama administrations have dealt with the Saudi role in 9/11.
I don't claim to understand it. I just think an investigation is needed.
