DNC needs to elect someone who doesnt push or act preferencial to any candidate. This should be a party law, or rule.DWS is an embarassment to all women politicians. All partys speak for a diverse people. Insisting anyone fall in line with a DNC chair is the height of destructive behavior.

by the new President, who appoints if we lose?

So someone appointed her, and at one time Ed Rendell?

Why the political ups and downs in this position?

The party endures more than any incumbent

didn't we used to have Chairmen who served a long time?

Howard Dean ran a competitive strategy in 50 states.

What happened?

Ed Rendell was DNC chair from 1999-2001 and so President Bill Clinton appointed him.

If something turns out good, they 86 it. It seems we try things and if they don't work, we keep them. If they do work, we dump them. Go figure! WTF???? It invites and maintains constant turmoil.

Who was the DNC Chair between Howard and Debbie? I think it has been DW-S for nearly 8 years. And the Democratic Party has gone down, down, down. More red state governors, more GOP majorities in state legislators passing through whatever ALEC puts through the pike, more GOP US House members and Senators. All I can say is whoever does the hiring of DNC chairs isn't doing the Democratic Party any favors by keeping this misbegotten person in this terribly important post. This ain't no way to run a political party. Does ANYONE know why our party is like this? They changed everything back 24 years ago so Dems would win elections again, and now they are shooting themselves in the foot!

Debbie has held the job for the last 5 years. She has actually served for slightly less time than Reinse Preibus at the RNC.

Regardless of who wins the next election DWS will be stepping down at the end of the year.

... for that bit of good news. Tim Kaine didn't do much that sticks out in my mind. I guess I think DW-S has been in there all that time because of the disastrous job she has been doing for the Democratic Party.

2014 wasn't good either, largely because the country went into an ebola scare right before the election.

In 2012 Obama won reelection. We picked up seats in the Senate even though we had a lot more to defend then they did. We also won the popular vote for the House, but it was gerrymandered beyond belief.

2016 obviously hasn't happened yet.

It's not that her departure has been officially confirmed. It just pretty much goes without saying. Party chairs usually serve for one term, alongside a presidential term. Sometime a chair will step down in the middle of their term. When that happens their successor may finish out the remaining time in the term and then serve a full term of their own. That is what happened with both Reinse Preibus and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. And so they will both be finishing their jobs at the end of the year.

Besides, Obama appointed her. When he goes, she goes.
