Two of my all-time favorite Americans. I remember the flags at half staff at my elementary school when Eleanor died. I was in junior high by 1963 . . .

4. Big Fan of Peace Corps.

I was a double offender. Served two times, both in West Africa. Mid-eighties in The Gambia, mid-nineties in Cote d'Ivoire. Water sanitation the first time, Guinea Worm Eradication (one of the Carter Center projects) the second time.

5. A plaque imbedded in the steps of the Student Union at the University of Michigan commemorates

where Kennedy stood when he proposed the Peace Corps (October 14, 1960). I've stood there many times and it always makes me feel proud of how America used to be, and sad about how America is now.
