there who doesn't realize that Conservatives have wanted the country to fail (and have done everything they could to SEE that it fails) just to spite Obama, show them this blast from the past. As early as October 2009 this should have been obvious. Conservatives cheering the loss of the 2016 Olympics in Chicago because it would be a political defeat for Obama. When was the last time you saw Americans cheering an American LOSS?

And the three years that followed this were all of the same pattern. Rooting for the country to FAIL, and the American people to suffer as much as possible while Obama is in the White House.

Hosting the Olympics is fucking EXPENSIVE, and often results in all sorts of nasty shit happening to people on hte lower end of the income scale when their city decides to "pretty up." Criminalization of poverty, basically; harsh new anti-homeless laws pop up,police presence and authoritarian abuses rise, property taxes rise beyond the abilities of people to pay, the city clashes and slashes spending jut to try to meet the bloated fucking Olympic budget...

The logic the Republicans use is garbage, but the sentiment of "fuck the Olympics" is spot-on.

2. I'm forced to agree with you on this one.

The Olympics have stopped being about the world coming together and celebrating human strength and endurance for a long time now. Instead it's nothing but one big tourist trap fucking cash grab for the sponsor corporations and a few lucky gold medalists who get big money endorsements thrown their way.

I can skip all the pretense and just watch Tiger Woods out on the golf course instead, or something.

The Greeks seem to be blaming the Olympics for a lot of their debt issues. The Olympics seem like at one time it was a good deal for cities but form the last three or four I'm seriously doubting their economical magic. I believe Montreal lost a lot money in the 70s also.

Half of them cheered losing the Olympics because it meant that the city they associate with Obama lost.

The other half blamed Obama for "not even being able to handle getting the Olympics right."

I, for one, am glad that Rio de Janeiro got it. The Olympics are often a country's "debut" on the world scene: Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968. Seoul 1988, Beijing 2008. I'm rooting for Istanbul in 2020, because the other top candidates are Tokyo (an ego trip for the metropolitan governor) and Madrid (Barcelona had it in 1992).
