(29,503 posts)he may be Republican, but he's pretty much squeaky clean. He spearheads lots of Congressional tax investigations and doesn't like being tarred by association with people like Romney.

(53,061 posts)Why George Romney released his tax returns
There was, though, one exception to this pattern: He balked when I badgered him for a copy of his latest Form 1040, the Federal Individual Income Tax Return, Harris wrote. Release of the document, while it might serve a political purpose, would not prove very much, he argued. One year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show, and what mattered in personal finance was how a man conducted himself over the long haul.
Stumped by this argument, I was not prepared for the move that it eventually led him to make: He ordered up all the Form 1040′s that he and Mrs. Rome had filed over the past twelve years including those profitable ones from when he saved the American Motors Company from bankruptcy and became a millionaire on the companys stock options.
Harris learned a great deal from the numbers, notably that the Romneys had given 23% of their adjusted gross income to charity, about three quarters of that to the Mormon church. One year, they gave away all but $390 of Romneys salary and bonus.

(11,495 posts)The Romney camp is saying they are "taking the gloves off" and everything is fair game when attacking the president. They think this new tactic will work, and I assume they think the tax return issue will go away, I really doubt that!
The problem with Romney's attacks are they are all a pack of lies, period! They just make up shit and throw it at the president and hope it will stick, but the only ones buying his lies are his brain dead base, and if he continues to lie instead of addressing the really issues about Bain, it is going to backfire on him big time.
No matter what lies he throws out, Bain is not going away, and releasing his taxes is the only option he has. If there is nothing to hide, then why refuse to release them? That is going to be the questions thrown back at him time after time, no matter what he lies about to try and take the heat off.
