and honestly the whitewashing controversy this time around is pretty unfounded. Makoto has a fully mechanical body that is not representative of her former one. She is never confirmed to be ethnically Japanese and doesn't look particularly Japanese (compared to other characters within the various renditions of the series). It's a non-issue. GitS takes place in a cyberpunk Japan that features a diverse mesh of cultures and races, and from what I've seen, the trailers depict that very well.

Avatar was way different because it was literally every character and it's unmistakable that they were of different races within the original work.

and never understood the whitewashing controversy. Even though I basically tell people the same thing you posted they still want to scream whitewashing. Can't win'em all I guess.

ITS ABOUT LITTLE ASIAN GIRLS having heros. THERE are few Asian HEROs in the DC and Marvel Universe. Most of them WERE villains. At least if that little girl lived in San Francisco, and grew up in an Asian population, she might have found a place like Japan Town where Manga and Anime is SOLD that has ASIAN people featured in it as Heros.

I think about my friend Vicky who grew up in an area where there were no Asians and the CRAP IGNORANT white people heaped on her as she grew up.

Familiarize yourself with the source material or don't kneejerkedly comment. Anime isn't the Japanese equivalent of superhero comics. I'm more offended at the comparison than I am the studio's decision not to cast the protagonist as the ethnic majority of the country that the source material originated.

So should literary characters with unspecified/nonexistent race be forced to conform to the ethnic majority of the country of origin of the work they are derivative of during the process of hiring actors to play them? Even when said work is being adapted for audiences of a country with a different ethnic majority?

I find that notion contradictory to diversity, not in support of.

So you are all for white washing literature and movies from other cultures just to suit the notion that white actors are superior and can play the parts better, or that they will only be accepted by an American Audience?

THE literature came from Japan! Masamune Shirow is the creator of Ghost in the Shell.

This reminds me of when the movie Memoirs of a Geisha was made and they used Chinese Actors because HOLLYWOOD figured, what the hell, most Americans don't know a Chinese from a Japanese anyway, they will do. As it turns out the author was not even Japanese, but an American from Tennessee named Arthur Golden who had his own stereo type of what and who Geisha were. The story was not from some Memoir of a Geisha but from some American fantasy that wasn't even close to the truth.

They COULD have done Ghost in the shell, the way Hollywood took The SEVEN SAMURAI and turned it into the Magnificent Seven. It was intentionally made using the elements of the story and remaking it into something more Americanized.

In Ghost in the Shell they kept referring to her as The Major. That was her title, but she has a NAME. Why does she have a name?? Because she is not a ROBOT as you said, she is an Android with a human soul inside of it, hence the title Ghost in the Shell.

攻殻機動隊= Kōkaku Kidōtai. (Ghost in the Shell).

His intent is obvious.

I am glad that you liked the video... it was created by two Asian-Americans: Chewy May and Jes Tom.

with someone who obviously thinks WHITE WASHING a Japanese film is fine.

I remember years ago going to an Anime Chat room to talk about Anime and because I was JAPANESE, I WAS THROWN out... Its like these people think they should be able to appropriate all Culture not their own.
