This particular turn of phrase invites an obvious question that Carlson is either too disingenuous to acknowledge or too dense to understand, and during his show on Sunday night, John Oliver decided to ask and answer it all at once. After grimly reporting that Carlson's query "made the Statue of Liberty give up and drown herself in the Hudson River," the Last Week Tonight host continued:

If I may just point out, Tucks: Just because a nation is failing doesn't mean it can't produce some amazing people, just as—and I think we all know who Exhibit A for this is—a "successful" nation can produce some truly failed human beings. Hashtag Tucker.

Oliver went on to call the ban's existence a "shameful," "cruel," and "unnecessary" fact that "undermines our standing in the world," which are, coincidentally, the exact same phrases I'd use to describe Tucker Carlson's continued employment.
