The family was stationed in Dachau, where me and my brother were born. While there Dad bought a Grundig console stereo and two external speakers in 1960. It had a turn-table and short-wave radio reception along with AM & FM radio. Beautiful wood console and some of the most amazing sound. We carted that thing around with us to all over the world. Had to have the transformer replaced for 120v when we moved back to the states. The thing finally gave it last performance in 2013. No stereo I've ever had or heard compares. Beautiful piece of furniture as well. This is it:

2. Tube model!

Thanks for sharing the memories!

Those old tube models were beautiful, and they produced a warm, rich sound that had to be heard to be believed.

I owned a top end 1958 Voice of Music floor console with a tube amp, similar to the Grundig, though I must admit the wood wasn't nearly as nice!

What struck me was the lifelike sound of the music.

Acoustic guitar and voices singing sounded like the person was right there in the room with you.

Modern sets with solid state and digital don't deliver the magic.

Hope you still have the set.

Thanks for sharing that!

Power hogs and generated a lot of heat but the sound, OMG!

Sadly I don't have that piece of furniture any longer. When I moved the last time it fell off the truck and was horribly damaged.

I did see one on ebay, I wouldn't mind having one myself!

Just beautiful, thanks for sharing!
