Related: About this foruma reworking of dark side of the moon. flaming lips do it right, reinventing rather than
reproducing. IMO.

(7,299 posts)but I would call it an interpretation rather than reinventing it. Reinventing something would be like Dylan's version of all along the watchtower and Hendrix's or Joni Mitchell's woodstock and Csm's.

Exactly -- it's not a successful "re-invention" unless you literally take OWNERSHIP of the song. I would have bet my first born male child that each of these were written by the performers -- but they're all cover songs, LOL!

-- as a backdrop for the vocal.
Lips turned the music and vocal into a duel, and I don't know whose side to take, LOL

Anyways I do like the Lips in general but not huge fan of this re-working as I'm too used to the original. Too close to my heart. Been rocking it since High School in the 80's, so ...
Anyways you should check out the Lips albums The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. They're f'ing brilliant works, esp. the former ... Takes a little to settle in to the hooks, somewhat lo-fi groove, and to get use to Cohn's weird voice but once you do by listening 3 or 4 times through (headphones highly rec'd) you'll find they're real keepers. Both very much concept albums in the vein of early 70's PF.
From Soft Bulletin
From Yoshimi (and yes, Cat Stevens has co-songwriter credit and gets paid for this, you'll likely recognize why).
Friggin' LOVE those songs and records, man.
