Who could look at a grieving family and do this?

Once, when my two older boys were seven and eight, I found out that they had done something I felt was bullying.

They learned an important lesson about civility and the way we treat each other. The behavior has never been repeated and they both stand up to bullies and tell them to stop it these days.

One of the best days I had my first year. Half of my 6th grade class had been harassing a new girl who was smart, beautiful and a little awkward. I never took lunch and she came to the room one day and asked me why she had to live. It was on a Fri. and I went home and called experienced teachers, my principal and wrote and rewrote a speech which I gave to the 1/2 class during their recess. I told them they must have pretty low self esteem and kept it up for 15 minutes. The girls cried (good). Parents told me later that they were glad I took care of it since they were sick of hearing about this girl at their dinner tables every night. Why didn't THEY do something TOO? The girl moved and we lost touch but then she found me 10 years later and she had written and dedicated a book of poems to me.

There is - from all appearances - a beautiful person out there - who is probably making the world better for other people as well, and that would appear to be partly due to you. Small and thought full acts so often make the world a far better place.

I have also found that temporarily weak people often become permanently very strong.

Thank you

P.S. Also, could you post that speech so that it might be used by other teachers? It could be very useful indeed.

teachers, especially if they are lucky enough to have a lot of friends who were good teachers. Mine have given me excellent advice. I have done the same and passed their advice to newer teachers. Thanks for appreciating our work.
