1. I have noticed that even on the networks they're pushing the language envelope

I watch Stephen Colbert and he and his guests are regularly getting bleeped, but it's obvious what they said. The censors used to be very strict, but that appears to be changing on TV these days.

That's a very good point! From what I've seen, I think we do. The late night hosts say things we wouldn't hear during prime time.

5. Yes, that's it. Even here though I think they are a little more reserved when it comes to chat shows

even after 9pm. Drama shows after 9pm are often way looser !

6. Yes, I remember that now

The more explicit shows are shown at 9pm or later - after "the family hour." But I also can't remember late night hosts of even the recent past (David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Jay Leno) using words that we're hearing regularly now. They may *bleep* them, but they don't make much of an effort to hide them. And just the other night, a guest on Stephen Colbert's show used an obscene gesture which was blurred - and Stephen had him do it again to show him how the blurring thing worked...

8. I have also been in the studio audience for two of them

I saw both David Letterman and Jon Stewart in 2008 and I'm positive that neither used *bleepable* words, LOL. I do remember Jon Stewart complaining that there was a lot he couldn't do on "basic cable."

10. I'm fortunate that I live in New York

I'm nowhere near the City, pretty far upstate, but I didn't have to drive so it was doable. And both of them are favorites of mine. And I have to say that they both are extremely nice. Both talked and joked with the audience before the show. And after The Daily Show, Jon remembered that a woman had asked about the notes he uses, so he gave them to her. And Dave Letterman came out after the show and thanked everyone for coming. After 30+ years, he didn't have to do that, but he did.

11. It helps being on the same continent ! With my brother living in Florida, it's where we mostly head

to, but I will try do a couple of nights in NY next time (in a POST Trump America, hopefully !).

12. But you're extremely fortunate to live where you do - I'm very envious

I have been to Ireland twice in my life - once when I was a teenager with my camp group who rode horses and the second time with my parents and grandmother - and it has to be the most beautiful country on earth with the nicest people - it was very tough to leave. And it doesn't hurt that my paternal great grandparents both emigrated from Ireland.
