(4,066 posts)What I hear her saying is that we should not dwell upon the wrongs that are done to us. In 12-step meetings we talk a lot about not holding resentments. Pretty much the same thing she says. Holding a resentment gives the other person power and their act power that you should not give them. A favorite phrase I hear is "Don't let them rent space in your head for free."
I think it's good advice to not hold resentments and dwell upon bad acts. Forgiving them, to me at least, is another thing all together. I will not forgive the behaviors of the racists, xenophobes and other haters. They will not get off that easily.
I do get that the many teachings of profits and wiser people than me say forgive. I guess I'm just not that enlightened yet since I draw a distinction between forgiving and forgetting.
Some memories are impossible to forgive and forget. They define one's life and future attitudes about subsequent experiences. At least that's true for me. It's a constant battle to stay positive and be proactive.

(18,124 posts)therefore no forgiveness in my soul, yet I was listening to a private phone on speaker, not mine, a neighbour and his son. NIGGER was used by the son in a sadly enlightening moment for me of just where we are at this time in ameriKKKan history. McDonalds was crowded with.......gist of that conversation. Yes, one of my favourite neighbours saw that I heard and dropped his head. HE voted for HRC, the son voted to MAGA.
AA will always be seen, by wypipo, as to what the description of a whole race of mostly decent AA is above. Racists don't take up space in my head. Racism always has since I can never be rid of being classified as nigger. It will always be this way. Period.
