Something important about Fred Rogers that probably won't be mentioned in this film is how important he was to new mothers who watched this show with their babies and small children. We needed to be told, as we sat there with baby fat still clinging to us, often covered with baby shit and puke, smelly and unkempt because we felt unable to put the baby down long enough for a shower, that he loved us just the way we were. If you've never been in that situation, you can have no idea of how important, sometimes how sanity-saving, or even life-saving, hearing that we could be loved just as we were was to us.

When my son was little, I sat on the beach with a woman whose child was playing with mine, and we talked about Mr. Rogers. At some point, he had stopped wearing his wedding ring, and we both had noticed and were very upset about it!

My husband worked in the trust department of a bank in Western PA that managed some of Mr. Rogers' money, and he got to see checks endorsed by Fred Rogers every month. And I was envious.

I was 9 years old. My family was invited to the Kennedy family home, Hickory Hill in McLean, Virginia. My dad, who worked for the US Forest Service, had been a member of team team that created Youth Conservation Corp and the Kennedy’s hosted an event to celebrate that and other youth oriented programs. Mr. Rogers was there to entertain the kids at the party while our parents did parent stuff. Mr. Rogers hugged each of us and we just sat and talked...there were about a dozen or so kiddos. I remember it being a wonderful day.
