(47,399 posts)They keep getting worse each election. There was time that I didn't think it could get worse than GW. I shudder to think who will be next!
yurbud
(39,405 posts)Even the republicans couldn't imagine how much worse it would be, but after the ridiculous primaries in 2012, they should have gotten a clue. That and the TeaParty and Freedom Caucus folks.
The republican party has attracted carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen, people looking to make a quick buck out of running for political office. We've seen people, Joe Walsh of Illinois comes to mind, who have no skills whatsoever, go into politics, because they can't do anything else. 21st century carpetbaggers I suppose, but they are so off the wall, it is hard to believe they are able to garner so much support. Even Henry Hill from The Music Man had some talent and charisma.

(39,405 posts)A lot of the ducks were lined up for fascism under Baby Bush, but Republicans in Congress blinked rather than pulled the trigger not out of patriotism or idealism but because they could imagine what would happen to them if they failed, or worse succeeded and it inevitably came undone.
Tea Partiers are dirt fucking stupid and can't understand simple things like cause and effect, so they are more likely to go along with it, not realizing that it will eventually blow up in their faces.
PatSeg
(47,399 posts)It didn't happen overnight. They should have been dealt with back in the Bush years, but republicans have been giving these kooks a lot of leeway out of fear of the base. Apparently there is pretty much nothing that they won't do or tolerate for a vote.
You would think that to qualify for public office, one would need some knowledge about how government works, but these dumb nuts are just performing, while they look for financial benefits and other perks.

(1,288 posts)People, like Bob Dornan and Alan Keyes put themselves forward as Presidential candidates in the past, but got no following. There was no Limbaugh and AM right wing talk radio before '92 and Fox came online in the late 90's. Candidates like Herman Caine and Michelle Bachman were unthinkable before then.
After decades of lowering the media bar, its power has been multiplied with social media and internet. There's people casting votes who actually watch Infowars nonironically for more than 30 seconds - millions of them. There's nearly a direct correlation between this shit media and the results and it's probably with us to stay.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump often included Johns 1972 song Rocket Man as a crowed-pleasing song in rallies. This became so frequent that John himself had to give an interview making clear that he didnt support Trump. John in fact performed for a Hillary Clinton fundraiser. In January of 2016, Anthony Scaramucci, then a member of Trumps transition team, falsely claimed that John was going to perform at the inauguration.

(8,200 posts)But, you know what really is scary is that some 30% of the voters think he is a blooming genius. Where in the hell is this going to lead us? He has alienated our long time allies including even Britain and Canada. Trashed NATO, oh hell the list is too damn long to even be worth reiteration. I hope the stupid asshole, yeah, asshole, gets a really jolly welcome in England. I hope he gets a nice touch and feel tour of the neighborhood where his buddies poisoned innocent people.

(28,252 posts)trump spews out that sort of psycho-babble---and his fanatic crowds eat it up. The mid-terms better be way beyond successful for Democrats. Allowing this inmate and his supporters to take over the asylum cannot be allowed. Everybody, leave the intra-party squabbles behind---chances are the Russians are again contributing to such distractions. We've got a nation to salvage.

(9,350 posts)Do not try to tell me this guy is not crazy. Clearly, that man is not all there. He might actually make Sarah Palin sound coherent. I do not think he, or anyone else knows what the heck he is talking about.
So, it is really getting to the point where we need to use the 25th amendment. Either Donald Trump is not actually in charge of the United States, or he needs to be removed from office. Anyone who talks like that is not a sane and clear thinking person. There is really something clinically wrong with that man.
