President Trump said Theresa May is "doing a fantastic job" as PM at the country estate Chequers 40 miles from London. He apologized to May today after The Sun tabloid interview on his criticism of her on Brexit. "I think she's a terrific woman." Trump also called the U.S. & U.K. relationship the "highest level of special." But Trump still thinks, as he told The Sun, that May's Conserv. Party rival Boris Johnson would be a great PM. He said he did not criticize May, reports were "fake news." "I have a lot of respect for the PM."
Trump avoided a question from CNN, "fake news." Asked by Fox about Putin & the Russian election meddling investigation, Trump said it's a "rigged witch hunt." PM May reiterated on Brexit, "We will be leaving the EU" on March 29, 2019. "That's what the people voted for & that's what we will be delivering."
On immigration Trump said, "I think it's changing the culture." He has a great relationship with Merkel, but I think it's "hurt Germany." They better watch themselves. Countries that never had difficulties -I don't think it's good for Europe, I don't think it's good for our country. May said that the U.K. has a proud history of welcoming immigrants to the U.K., but that border control was important..More, https://www.cbsnews.com/live-news/donald-trump-teresa-may-joint-press-conference-british-pm-uk-visit-today-2018-07-13-live-updates/

- Inside Chequers, The Prime Ministers Country Residence- The Week, Jul 2, 2018
A look behind the closed doors of the Buckinghamshire estate where ministers are brainstorming Brexit. British prime ministers have been using the Chequers estate as their official country residence since 1921.
Today, Theresa May has summoned her entire Cabinet to a meeting at the retreat, where she will ask them to agree the trading relationship with the EU that the UK will seek in the final stage of the Brexit negotiations. The decision to invite a far larger group than usually discusses the EU negotiations prompted accusations that the prime minister is trying to sideline her so-called Brexit war cabinet, says The Times.
It had been thought that May would convene a two-day meeting to force through compromises on customs, standards and other critical issues. But as it turned out, Cabinet ministers and those entitled to attend Cabinet meetings were asked to arrive at the prime ministers country retreat in Buckinghamshire at 9.30am today, says The Times. A dinner is planned and the 29 ministers invited have been warned that talks may continue late into the night.
Situated in more than 1,000 acres of Buckinghamshire countryside, just outside Aylesbury, Chequers is used both as a relaxing retreat for the prime minister of the day and a place to entertain high-profile visitors. Previous guests have included everyone from Richard Nixon to Claudia Schiffer.
Gift to the nation, A building has been recorded on the site since the 12th century, but it was after a project of extensive enlargement and remodelling in 1565 that the modern Chequers took shape. Over the years, the house has been connected to many important events in English history. Lady Mary Grey, sister of Lady Jane Grey, was briefly kept under house arrest at Chequers during the reign of Elizabeth I...

Silent film, 1921, British Pathe news, Chequers estate grounds and rose garden.
Intro:. "Chequers. This house of peace and ancient memories was given to England as a thank-offering for her deliverance in the Great War 1914-1918, and as a place for recreation and rest for her Prime Ministers for ever. Buckinghamshire."
_______
- By 1917, changing social dynamics meant the prime minister could no longer be assumed to have his or her own country estate to entertain guests, so the then owners of Chequers, Sir Arthur Lee and his wife Ruth, proposed to sign the estate over to the government for the use of the nations leader.
A stained glass window commissioned by the couple reads: This house of peace and ancient memories was given to England as a thank-offering for her deliverance in the great war of 19141918 as a place of rest and recreation for her prime ministers for ever.
David Lloyd George was the first PM to use the estate as his country residence, following the Lees departure in 1921.
