Just about all voted for you! Are all of those coal mines up to capacity now, everyone employed? How are they doing?

(4,066 posts)He blew smoke up their asses and they bought it. I feel bad for them. He used their desperation against them.
The coal jobs are not coming back no matter who is President. Nor are the buggy whip and carriage jobs.

Winning West VirginiaJFK's Primary Campaign
"I would not be where I now am, I would not have some of the responsibilities which I now bear, if it had not been for the people of West Virginia." President John F. Kennedy, June 20, 1963
Religious bigotry was one of John F. Kennedys greatest adversaries in the 1960 Presidential primary campaign. In West Virginia, he confronted the issue head-on and defeated it. In early April, JFK arrived in West Virginia, a rural state with a struggling economy, to discover that a strong lead in a state poll tracked four months earlier had evaporated. He now trailed his opponent, Senator Hubert Humphrey, by 20 points. The explanation came from Kennedys advisors: No one in West Virginia knew you were a Catholic in December. Now they know.
Yet just four weeks later, the people of West Virginia handed him a stunning victory that he credited with securing the Democratic nomination for President. Sweeping a state in which Catholics comprised barely 5 percent of the population, Senator Kennedy proved that a Catholic candidate could win votes.
JFKs campaign in West Virginia was all-out. He traveled up and down the statemeeting thousands of voters, listening to their stories and speaking at large events and small gatherings. He shone a national spotlight on their plight and
detailed a plan for economic recovery. He commended their strength in the face of adversity. He affirmed the separation of church and state.
And on May 10, 1960, the people of an economically distressed, overwhelmingly Protestant, hardscrabble state in Appalachia put their trust in the elegant, young Catholic senator, who spoke in a Boston accent about a brighter future. He won their votes, and they won his heart. The people of West Virginiatheir kindness and fairness, their grit and determination and patriotismmade their mark on this young candidate and helped to shape the President he would become. https://www.jfklibrary.org/Exhibits/Past-Exhibits/Winning-West-Virginia.aspx

In this story now in LBN, Manchin spats with Schumer over his vote decision on the new SC nom.
Joe states that there are 800,000 people- 40% of the WVa. state population- who have *pre-existing medical conditions! So it's an impt. issue. That's an unbelievable amount of sickness, mainly from poison, pollution, poverty & lifestyle. Makes my head explode!
---
The Supreme Court will ultimately decide if nearly 800,000 West Virginians with pre-existing conditions will lose their healthcare. This decision will directly impact almost 40% of my state, so Im very interested in his position on protecting West Virginians with pre-existing conditions." https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/07/09/2018/manchin-statement-on-presidents-supreme-court-nominee

(7,396 posts)And they have for generations. Some got out a while back (Hillbilly Elegy) but they always maintained contact with the home place for the most part. There seems to be some kind of built in excuse that people are too old to learn new trades and new ways of thinking. But that process is not as smooth as it sounds. Family runs deep around here.

(17,982 posts)Is about an Ohio Town about 30 miles South of me. The family moved here to work at the Steel Mill.
His family stayed there after the Mill closed. After WW 2 his Ancestors moved from KY. for better jobs. Those who stay there have the same mentality of those who stayed in KY. After the war.
Now, they listen to Con men like Trump.
The irony of J D Vance, whose Grandmother pushed him to succeed is that he is now a Republican!
Lost me completely when I found that out.

(809 posts)picked a town in West Virginia and would fill a truck full of food and drive it down to this poor town. This was a regular thing he did and the community adored him. It might be nice if more liberals did this. Also, Democrats need to campaign in the poverty stricken parts of this state. It worked for both Kennedys. We need to change their views of Democrats.

(1,068 posts)All across the country, in every county and district that one can find are these people that are in such financial despair. During the campaign they saw 45 as a savior, he was and always has been a devil. This idiot on the campaign trail was able to use the financial destitution these people had for votes. And now all of them are going to see their grasp of the American Dream dry up and blow away in the wind. I am just so pissed off that a few flowery words could get an idiot like this into office.

(1,068 posts)For me the frightening part is that we are all watching the same news broadcasts ( I think). But everybody has a different perspective and things get twisted out of context.
The disgusting part is just having to see that filthy swine on television everyday.

(25,839 posts)and other basic jobs that support people, like nursing and teaching, are generally looked down upon, especially by the college-educated elites. Oh, truck drivers. I understand that there's already a growing shortage of truck drivers, and that's only going to get worse.
I recently had new windows and doors installed, and I told the two guys who did it how grateful I am that there are people like them out there to do this, because I sure as heck couldn't. The one said he really liked doing it, and his entire manner all day supported that claim.
Meanwhile, the mantra that everyone must have a four year liberal arts college education sends young people into irrational debt and does not open the door to a decent job. Our high schools should be instrumental in getting young people thinking about the skilled trades, but every time someone suggests that, whether here or out in the larger world, well meaning people start screaming that we're only trying to disadvantage some people. Actually, they'd be greatly advantaged to learn a trade. A person can always go back to college or simply read on their own if they want to learn more.

Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, furnace and AC replacement and repair.
For so long, like you said they have been downgraded. Anyone that works with their hands.
I recently had an old Sun room torn down, replaced with a bright, new long lasting deck that needs no upkeep. Bottom and shutters painted, power washed. Both leaders were middle aged. The painter was 68,painted shutter with out spilling a drop. His helpers were young. I had to remind them a few times what the contract said,( filling stress cracks, etc.)
Community Schools are turning out the students mentioned above as fast as they can. They make a good wage with an AD.
Vocational Schools are turning out experienced students. Even Public Schools are now concentrating on Engineering,Robotics. The tools needed for the future.
Those areas that have high unemployment need this. It costs money to invest in the future. Republicans are dragging us back.
