(3,408 posts)The man rescued is a soldier stationed at Ft. Lewis. He climbed Mt. Hood with a plan to take his own life. Fortunately, he changed his mind. It was late in the day....a particularly dangerous time to descend because of potential rock-fall. He, and his rescuers stayed on the mountain until this copter could be summoned. The unusual method was used because this helicopter did not have a winch.....the preferred method to retrieve stranded climbers.
Hellicopter rescues on Mt. Hood can be treacherous.

AND, the air is thinner at that altitude, which can negatively affect helicopter performance (and piloting, one would presume).
