Pete Buttigieg believes his experience as Mayor of South Bend has given him leadership skills that are sorely lacking in the White House.

(53,961 posts)I don't think it will be very far because of name recognition, and, let's be honest, because he is gay. He's a bit goofy, which is charming, and I feel that could work to his favor. I don't know too much about his polices, but I do look forward to finding out as time unfolds.

(205,552 posts)Appearing on Colbert was a good start, getting his name out there - and Colbert is serious about his politics, despite the fact he's a comedian - as we've sure seen over the years! And it's not like he's inexperienced, Cory Booker started out as mayor. I'm glad that he stepped up, I agree that he doesn't stand much of a chance with all the "big names" out there, but he could well bring up some new issues that we really need to hear about!

(17,311 posts)I'm a big fan of Pete's. I can't imagine him emerging at the top of this deep and impressive field of Dem candidates but I sure hope he sticks with it because he's an emerging political star.
I've seen him interviewed several times and I'm always nodding my head in agreement. Although this chat with Colbert felt rushed at times, it's the first occasion where I've heard about Pete's thoughts and interactions with Mike Pence. I'd never made that connection before. That would have been awkward (and frustrating, I'm sure).

(205,552 posts)So I was looking forward to his appearance on Colbert - who is informed and asks good questions. Seth Meyers is another one who's impressed me with the homework he does before interviewing candidates. I'd like to see him appear there rather than on the news shows which seem to be reduced to sound bytes. (Except for Rachel Maddow) I'm looking forward to hearing more from him - and I can't imagine how he could deal with Mike Pence! That would be frustrating for anyone....

(8,287 posts)Pete's from my home town and he is impressive. I really liked this interview but agree that it seemed rushed.
He made some great points about the younger generation and emergency declarations.
When that flooding took place, my brother's 4 acres were under water. I've never seen anything like it and neither had my brother. He sent me photos and I was shocked that it was so deep in his yard. Just endless rain. And South Bend is in the path of lake (Michigan) effect snow (about 80 miles east from Chicago) so I've lived through the blizzard of 78 and many many more climate disasters in that region. I don't miss it either.
Mayor Pete may not win the nomination but we have to consider that our younger generation will be carrying the torch long after we boomers are gone and we need to listen to them. I hope the best for him.
Again, thanks for sharing the video.

(205,552 posts)Thanks for sharing your experience! I was impressed, though of course I'd like to hear more - but he adds quite a bit to the national conversation with a fresh perspective. And though he is unlikely to get the nomination this time around, people are getting to know him - and he has plenty of time...

(8,287 posts)I can't even imagine how he and IQ45 would debate and I know we're a long way from that but he does make sense.
I don't think he brags but he is a Rhodes Scholar too. Very smart guy.
It's way past your bedtime, ha

(205,552 posts)"Debating" with the likes of Trump is something I wouldn't wish on anyone! I still don't understand how he got away with the loutish and threatening stalking that he exhibited in his debates with Hillary. She was my senator and mostly ran unopposed, never had a serious challenger unless you count Rick Lazio in 2000. Lazio left his podium and went over to her side of the stage - he asked her to sign a pledge to abstain from benefiting from "soft money." That was it for him, since just approaching her like that was viewed as threatening. So how Trump got away with actual threatening behavior that sure creeped most of the country out is beyond me!
And I did remember that when he was first introduced, they said he was a Rhodes Scholar! Rachel Maddow should have him on! She also conducts terrific interviews and is very fair to all her guests!
And yes, it's past my bedtime. I fell asleep earlier in front of the TV and should have gone to bed then...

(205,552 posts)Colbert isn't out to zing him, he was basically letting us get to know more about him. I was looking forward to this interview and I'm hoping to hear more from him!

(7,277 posts)aka the Breck Girl. Not his fault. Hes smooth as well. Again not a disqualification, but lacking in gravitas. Its going to be hard to shift me away from Elizabeth, Kamala and Amy.

(63,912 posts)I admire this young man, but let's open the office of President to a woman first and then see how it goes from there. There will be plenty of time for this young man...

Thanks for posting Rhiannon!
