(4,723 posts)I lived in Florida, moving there from the Midwest. During a tropical storm, when trying to keep up to date on info, I saw a segment where a reporter was out on the beach getting pummellled by wind, like he could hardly stay where he was. Then right behind him people came walking into frame as if there was no wind. The reporter was just manufacturing drama. Which is what FAUX is doing here.

(34,195 posts)As images from the segment spread online, Lawrence Jones was quickly mocked for wearing the vest, including by reporters who have covered the border area for years and never needed to wear a bulletproof vest for their work.
Several reporters said they had conducted ride-alongs with CBP agents and were not required to wear protective gear. BuzzFeed News journalists have also frequently reported from the border with CBP officials, and have not been asked or required to wear the vests.
Some people pointed out that the vest didn't seem to be the right size for Jones, while others questioned whether it had a (metal bullet proof) plate inside of it.
There has never, ever been any requirement or need to wear a flak jacket at the US-Mexico border, and nobody's ever heard of a reporter doing so at any time.
"That's a decorative prop, not a functional piece of protective gear.
Next time you might want to buy the vest from the adults section."

(60,010 posts)Their was story on a twitter page which discussed, complete with close-ups and lots of comments, that he is wearing a backpack, backwards. Comments from several military guys described what a bullet proof vest would look like, which is no way near what he is wearing.
Sadly, many many people have no idea what a bullet proof vest would look like, so got taken in.
I would have tended to just say sheesh about the whole thing except for the guy's "I'm so masculine pose" which was poked fun at by a female reporter who has been covering news at the border for months, with no need for over dramatization or fake vests.

(5,401 posts)So close to the border, I've had to reverse my backpack so that the hordes surrounding me don't steal my lunch, and I've had to adopt my tough guy pose to keep them away!
It's horrible, I tell you! Look at the crowd, pushing and shoving, wanting to get into the US to steal our jobs!
