I don't think he sold us anything.

I can't understand how, after Bush, any Democrat could vote Republican for anything at all.

we lost in the so called "rust belt" states. And we lost the White House because of it. We need to understand them and implement policies and laws that show tangible results. There must be a renewed focus on jobs, good union paying jobs. As alluded to in the video, that includes and will help African Americans, gays, women, people from all walks of life.

His entire campaign was a series of vague promises that everything would be "the best ever" followed by putdowns and name-calling. Why these people decided that no plan was better than the plan in place is a smokescreen for other issues.

Hopefully this is a sign that Trump's SLIM margin of victory in the Rust Belt contains a lot of soft support. 2018 is also another sign that he has lost that soft support.

has drained to zero. Anyone with half a brain and a few clicks on "the google" could easily find out what a duplicitous, lying asshole he is long before 2016. Someone needs to rhetorically beat them over the head with that "personal responsibility" stuff they've weaponized......Hey, you should have known better. You fucked up. Live with it.

I would suggest to anyone who has not seen it to do so. It encapsulates just what kind of criminality this man has been up to his entire business career. Not to mention the whole family is in on it as well. Probably the most shady family business that's ever been in this position of Power in U.S. history. This is the Youtube link, but you may get a better picture using the CNN link.

I wanted to know and hear why a Democrat would vote for Trump, and I thought others would be curious as well.

I grew up in NY and there is a reason NYers hate him and couldn't believe people fell for his shit.

Here is one such family that fell for it and I was curious.

You have a problem with that?

I understand where they're coming from. I grew up in a union town. When you are in an economically stressed area, other issues go by the wayside. When you're in danger of becoming homeless, your kids can't get Christmas gifts or new school clothes, you don't have the luxury of voting against someone who says they can help vs climate change or illegal immigration.

He's right when he says the Democratic Party used to more strongly support the blue collar worker. They are now sort of left out in the cold by both parties. The Republicans sure don't care about them. The Democratic Party still represents them, but to a lesser extent. Maybe that's because there's fewer of them, now?

This established middle aged man who moved his elderly mother there is not in a good position to move for work. And he's likely not to have many good job offers at his age. But his sons could certainly move to a better work area, and maybe should.

The bad thing about living & working in an area that's overly dependent on a few industries, is that the entire area can quickly become decimated if something happens to those industries. There isn't an established field of non-related good work in the area, to take these workers on, when they're laid off. That is the fault of that city, in not diversifying.

They should first look to their state for solutions. The state can cut tax deals to lure new businesses there. Their local officials can do a few things. But Trump's policies have contributed to GM's cut of thousands of jobs.

Even now, one of the sons has still not written off Trump as a viable candidate. ???

Anyway, I feel sorry for them. I've seen these things first hand. (OTOH, I must say that when I was younger, I knew I could try and get a job at the local plants. But I decided I wouldn't event try. I didn't want to do that kind of work, and it wasn't smart, IMO, to get trapped in a dead-end job at a plant, because I wouldn't have been able to transfer that job experience to another job outside of that plant, if the plant laid me off. I left the area entirely, to a more diverse economy. Diversity is the key. After seeing the high unemployment and suffering during a recession, I made sure that I not only had an occupation that wasn't tied to one industry, but that I also had a second skill, so that I'd have more of a chance of getting work if I ever lost my job.)

He said that some people say that Mueller didn't find anything. Obvious Fox News watcher.

Also they are just stupid. He said that Obamacare caused his mother's medical expenses to go up. I assume, given his age, that his mother is on Medicare. It goes up a few dollars every year. Always has.

Stupid is as stupid does.

When the ideology clearly spells out how it wants to take from the poor and give to the rich, anyone with any sense of decency should know better. Yet these types of people could give the least shit until it starts to affect them directly. They should be called out for exactly what they are. I'll save my sympathy for those who voted with a conscience and were then affected negatively.

. . . starts talking about why Democrats lost voters like him, saying that Democrats "shifted focus," and began supporting "immigration, the gay community," etc. That's a false choice, and worse, it's a bigot's framing. There is absolutely nothing about wanting immigrants to be treated humanely and fairly, and support for LGBT rights that runs counter to supporting blue collar workers. He is right, though, that Democrats shifted away from aggressively supporting blue collar workers, and should recover their commitment to this people; but this kind of oppositional framing of the question as "identity politics" versus labor interests is bullshit, and deserved to be called out and condemned whenever someone invokes it.
