The Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration, a think-tank in Melbourne, Australia, describes climate change as "a near- to mid-term existential threat to human civilization" and sets out a plausible scenario of where business-as-usual could lead over the next 30 years.

Its paper argues that the potentially "extremely serious outcomes" of climate-related security threats are often far more probable than conventionally assumed, but almost impossible to quantify because they "fall outside the human experience of the last thousand years."

On our current trajectory, the report warns, "planetary and human systems [are] reaching a 'point of no return' by mid-century, in which the prospect of a largely uninhabitable Earth leads to the breakdown of nations and the international order."

There are no models anymore to predict the earth's dynamics of heat, food destruction and water.

No military can stop the billion who will migrate. Today's 65 million will jump to 150 - 200 million refugees.

Scale and speed are the only game in town when it comes to stopping climate change.

I have a hunch humans will not perish from earth for 250,000 years at a minimum. Note none of those things we take for granted existed just 250 years ago, while humans have survived for a few million years.

9. I never under-estimate what humans can survive

Go visit Hiroshima. It was devastated by radio-active fallout from Nukes just 75 years or so ago.
Today it is a thriving shining modern bustling city.

16. They had clean water access, help from the rest of the country, places to recover in. This is Earth.

It will not be the same at all. There will be no help systems from elsewhere. There will be no escape.

Any place humans will think to go, other humans will already have beaten them to it and used up all available natural resources that won't renew because Earth will be on its timeline of thousands of years ahead with no renewable resources in the heat of air, dead oceans and no water. It will slow roll restore, but we'll be gone.

23. Sorry, but I just celebrated my 79th bd

With the limited time I have left on this Earth, I am busy making the most of my remaining time as possible. And you will be happy to note that I have done my part in preserving the environment as best as I could. I always set the thermostat high in summer and as low as possible in winters. I drive a Chevy Spark which gives more mpg than any other gasoline powered car and I combine my trips to minimize mileage. And I always recycle carefully and avoid placing toxic materials in garbage.

My bet is the world will end (for humans) due to nuclear wars rather than any other reason. I was born and raised near Pakistan border and I have seen religious fanaticism first hand. Nuclear proliferation is already here.

Climate change denier ignore Earth's history over Billions of years. The last ice age was brutal. The Midwest was covered with several miles high Ice glaciers. When those were melted by the ensuing global warming, the largest body of fresh water on earth was formed which we call the Great Lakes. Yeah so climate change is going on for millions of years. I am convinced humans are not powerful enough to stop climate change. All we can do is do our individual responsibility to cause the least possible damage to the environment.

and living off the land. We are useless. It will take generations to discover all that we once knew.

11. Very true, now we have Big Agriculture

or corporations engaged in farming in a big way. Individual farmers are dwindling.
My own father took up farming after he retired from a civil service job in India. We had some of the best tasting vegetables and grains from the farm. I still remember puree's fried in home grown sesame oil. And the aroma of mangoes ripening wafted through the whole house. The mangoes I get at grocery stores here in Florida have almost no aroma.

Oh, and, we have a major political party in the U.S. that still refuses to acknowledge that the problem even exists! It's insanity.

He might well be our last chance to lead a Western mobilization to stop the march to 2 degrees Celsius.
