(616 posts)I wish that Maher had put the blame where it belongs. "Big Food," like "Big Pharma" and "Big Tobacco" is "SHAPING" us.
Obesity is a serious problem and getting worse.
But "Big Food" is pushing unhealthy food and food habits at us.
Take a look at the grocery cereal aisle. Targeting little kids with sugary, colorful cereals.
We subsidize the dairy industry, even supporting lots of fatty cheese in school lunches
White bread, with the good nutrients processed out and fed to livestock.
And more--

(6,791 posts)but most of them have been around for centuries and, with the exception of simply eating more than one can burn off, are rare, but no less real for that.
The explosion of obesity we are seeing today would not be possible with out the intervention of "Big Food." So you are right on target there. I wish more people were aware of it.

(43 posts)Has anyone else noticed that cities are constantly tearing down playgrounds(where children could play and stay fit)? The only place a child has to go is to a fast food place like MDs to have access to a playground. Also in the 60s schools had playgrounds and the children had a time in the morning; noon; and again in the afternoon to work off energy. For some reason I keep thinking of the documentary "Supersize Me".

We played there all the time, for hours, with no adults watching. It would never have occurred to our parents to sue anyone if wed gotten hurt while doing so.

(16,672 posts)Drinking, smoking, etc. are just as bad and even worse in some cases, but you don't always know it by just looking at someone.
Extra weight is obvious but really not much different than drinking/smoking/drugs. And.. I'm not talking about real genetic reasons for obesity.
I was overweight after having a baby and doing an interview at a hospital. The nurse supervisor interviewing me smoked like a freight train through the entire interviews (this was in the 70s). She then made a comment about my weight and didn't I think it was a problem. I wish to God I had the mouth I do now - then. I was 20 and intimidated. Now I would have went right back at her with her smoking.
