They are stuck on "but but but if the Senate won't convict....why even try?"

First of all, there is no guarantee that not enough Republican senators may be persuaded to join Democrats in the Senate to vote yes. As we've seen on guest spots on the news, more and more prominent Republicans outside of office, are publicly demanding impeachment.

Secondly, as you pointed out, how is a media prediction on a vote, without even hearing anything yet, have anything to do with upholding your constitutional duty to protect the country from a domestic threat?
