Greta Thunberg leads 500,000 people at Montreal climate rally. In the Fridays for Future weekly protest, the Canadian city of Montreal led the way, with half a million children and adults taking part. Millions more across the globe joined in.

Thunberg's speech to thousands of protesters was punctuated by a counter-rally organized by a pro-oil group. Thunberg's visit comes days before an election in which climate change promises to be a contentious issue. While Thunberg steered clear of making any direct criticism pf Alberta's oil sands or of commenting explicitly on Canada's upcoming election, she called for Canada to take responsibility for its emissions.
