(5,412 posts)compare to the pipeline protesters, the wisconsin protesters, or the occupy movement, totally ignored or portrayed as ignorant vandals who "don't know what they want."

(2,412 posts)Just before The War on Iraq we helped organize a Peace Demonstration with interfaith partners in Portland Oregon. We had 40,000 people in the streets for a peaceful event and we got less than two minutes coverage and only on a local TV station. If 25 idiots show up at a state capital with confederate flags, its all over the news 24/7. Yes, there is a difference! Who is being served here?

But yes, this is the eternal question. How to to give the media an image they will cover, and still getting the real and important message through.
I was part of an environment group who succeed quite well in getting our message out, by changing the script all the time. If we were carrying signs like a normal demonstration, we did it while swimming in a river. We had good artists and poets, so every new stunt could be more interesting and colorful. So the editors started to send their art critics to write about our shows, which were the usual political statements but dressed up into great images for them...

(19,204 posts)Double standards abound in "the land of the free". And a handful of ignorant rubes get more attention than hundreds of Native Americans trying to protect the land on which they live.

(762 posts)They don't want to start a confrontation with these armed paranoid white nutjobs. Of course, these nut jobs are looking for a confrontation to bolster their argument that they are fighting for their freedom. If you look at these protests, you have to wonder why they are armed. Do guns really help make their point? I guess they must since the MSM can't seem to give them enough coverage.
Officials did feel differently about armed black in the 60's. Just another example of white privilege.
