Steve Schmidt Tears Trump and the Republican Party A New One (May 17, 2020)
Steve Schimidt is one of the founders of the Lincoln Project. The podcast is close to an hour long.

(23,337 posts)Al held Schmidts feet to the fire a couple times and Schmidt didnt have a script to fall back on. Al Franken is a national treasure. There. I said it.

(24,610 posts)Not a big fan of podcasts, but this is really interesting. Podcasts seem to give a more honest dialog between the 2 parties. Franken gets Schmidt to open up....his words on McConnell are very interesting.
One of the best 50+ minutes of political discussion I have heard in a while. Schmidt can't and doesn't apologize for today's Republican Party.

he stayed with the repug party for so long, and why he's now out of it. Franken needs to be back in elective office and thank God for Schmidt and the rest of the never-trumpers. We need them to be the inept, orange bastard.

(19,972 posts)him staying in the Republican party versus the Catholic church says a lot about Schmidt being so invested in what he believes in.... it takes a long time for him to come to the realisation of what those on the outside can see. One of the best never Trumper interviews I've listened to....I hope Rick Wilson does it too.
One question I would love to hear explored is when Schmidt, Scarborough, Wilson etc call themselves Small C Conservatives. They've never been pressed on what exactly does that mean.

(20,588 posts)I really like Steve Schmidt. I listened last night and periodically during the day I recalled him saying - the parties were not enemies then.

(52 posts)He's a remainder of a bygone era when Republicans were actually sane.

(6,851 posts)Schmidt's understanding of history is shallow and tends to rely on dogma. He obviously doesn't understand that the modern Democratic party is "right of center".
