I think its an antiquated thing, probably somewhat common at one time in the upper Midwest
My grandparents and many of their friends (rural Illinois and Iowa) used the term for their wives and husbands
It's not as weird a thing as people are trying to make it out to be

I think it gets started by new parents trying to teach and enforce the mother and fathers to their young kids.
