Related: About this forumAs Predicted, Joe Manchin Steps Right Up And Promises To Scuttle Any Progressive Agenda.
(Sorry about the Fox News link)
It's good to know that there are still SOME things that are predictable about this election. One of them is the prompt appearance of 'Democratic' Senator Joe Manchin promising to block any progressive moves by VOTING AGAINST abolishing the filibuster. Thus, even if Democrats work their guts out, and manage to win both Georgia Senate seats, Manchin promises still hand the GOP the Koch-block button, allowing them to bring the country to a grinding halt until we have a Republican President again. The standard Republican strategy: "If WE can't govern, NOBODY can!"
Manchin promises to vote AGAINST abolition of the filibuster, meaning you'd need a minimum of 10 Republican senators to pass any law brought in by Democrats. Yeah...good luck with that, Joe.
And it's not like he'd pay a price for eliminating the filibuster. He's not even up for election for another four years.
I'll tell you what. How about the Democrats start talking about funding a HUGE green energy project in West Virginia that will put thousands to work...but if Manchin still votes to keep the filibuster, it'll be FUCK YOU, JOE! That would give him the POLITICAL COVER he needs to vote to abolish the filibuster.

(5,955 posts)Literally, Manchin listed all the ways he was going to screw the Democratic Party agenda, and then Baier said "but you won't become a Republican?"
Obviously if he did that, it would be the last straw. But, at least if he stays a Democrat, and assuming (a big assumption) Democrats win both Georgia seats, it would prevent Republicans from Chairing all the committees, and having majority votes on all the committees. I'll give him that much.

(4,149 posts)60 votes needed for cloture not 67 but, as you say, it might as well be a million.

(5,044 posts)That is bullshit! GOP Senators don't do anything honestly... WORDS MATTER and that should apply to those who use DU as well.
For the record, he voted against the nomination of Barrett.

(10,391 posts)and fry every opposition Senator up for re-election. Send "must pass" bills from the House to the Senate, and watch the faithless fucks try to squirm out of voting. These need not be overly Progressive, but just enough to "chap their hides." Some can even be slightly tailored to affect individual states (with GOP Senators). Ready-made campaign ads. "Why did Senator so-and-so vote against the 'Wisconsin' jobs bill? Because he hates his state, but loves 'dark money'!" A savvy elections staff can make it work...
