Rage Against The Machine, The Ummah Chroma - Killing In Thy Name

Rage Against the Machine detail the grim American history behind their 1991 anthem “Killing in the Name” in a new mini-documentary.

The 15-minute film Killing in Thy Name, a collaboration with the arts collective the Ummah Chroma, features a teacher educating a small group of students about “the fiction known as whiteness” as well as the United States’ history of racial and social oppression. The mini-doc also features quotations from historians like Howard Zinn and live footage of Rage Against the Machine performing the track, which bizarrely became a pro-Trump rallying cry following the 2020 presidential election.

“Living in the States, you’re living in one of the most brutal societies in the history of the world,” Zack de la Rocha says in an archival interview within the film.

“The country who inherited the genocide of the Native American people. A country which participated in slavery. Any society or any government or any system that is set up solely to profit a wealthy class while the majority of the people toil and suffer and sell their labor power, so long as that system’s only true motive is profit interest and not the maintenance and the betterment of the population, to meeting human needs, then that society should not stand. It should be challenged and questioned and overthrown.”

The discussions should start in elementary school and NEVER stop...we cannot solve racism, we can only tear at its roots and tend the garden of freedom against the weeds of oppression.

White or black, brown or red, yellow or albino...none of it matters beyond the powers that wield it against us all to divide us, to prevent the possible from becoming the real and to keep the power and its supporting mirages in place for another day, another week, another month, another year, another decade, another generation, another century and on and on and on it goes.

America right now is the conclusion to this progression - turning people on their brothers in service of a super minority - the ultra rich.

If we want freedom, there are certain things that have to go first - the concept of RACE...the reality of WHITE PRIVILEGE....and the existence of BILLIONAIRES. Remove these 3 things, these 3 evils that control and repress society's progress to a more egalitarian existence and the problems and divisions and hate so prevalent in this world will melt away like ice on a summer day...but only when the majority of the people want to protect the rights of the minority of those on the "success ladder".

"When the power of love is greater than the love of power, the world will know peace." - famously attributed to Hendrix...in reality an ancient concept but also credited to Spiritual Teacher Sri Chinmoy Ghose (1931-2007) or Ghandi or Jesus Christ or the Buddha in one form or another...the universal concept remains the ONE TRUTH in existence - we, you, me, them...WE are all one and when one part of the whole is detrimental to the whole, the whole must excise the cancer or the cancer with eat the whole. Empathy is the only thing that can save humanity from itself, and we are running on fumes in that category these days.

Love OF each other and FOR each other is the only way to repair the tears in our social fabric, the only way to atone for the sins of the past and to create the future reality of what CAN be instead of what others want to RETAIN.

I can see the endgame, but I sadly lack the imagination to develop the vehicle to take us all there...
