4:35 "Nobody Has To Teach Me How To Salute A Flag!"

One of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies, Seven Days In May.

After a failed coup attempt by the Joint Chiefs, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs pulls the all-to-familiar "I'm a patriot, protecting America" routine.

General Scott: "Nobody has to teach me how to salute a flag!"

President Lyman: "Somebody has to teach you about the DEMOCRATIC PROCESSES that flag REPRESENTS!"

All of these faux patriots who claim to be protecting 'their' America by attempting to overturn a free and fair election are nothing more than crybaby, sore loser, SEDITIONISTS. PERIOD! And they need to be called out as such. You can salute the flag all you want, you can even wear it like a CAPE, but if you don't respect the democratic principles and mechanisms that it represents, it's nothing more than a tacky costume for a traitor. You can wave the flag around, and even beat police officers over the head with it. You can cover your camo vest with flag pins, and wear cowboy hats: you can claim you went to Army Ranger School, you can wave bibles around, and you can eat apple pie until you're puking apple seeds; but if you don't support democracy, YOU'RE NOT A PATRIOT. You're just a sad little FASCIST, who takes comfort in the fact that you live in a country that allows you to stockpile weapons in your basement.

(And, just FYI, if you make that argument to a MAGAT, be prepared for the MAGAT to quote Rand Paul's stupid op/ed piece about the United States being a 'republic' and not a 'democracy,' as if they were two different things. The cold, hard truth is that half the Republican Party base no longer believes in democracy, or the idea that the person who gets the most votes wins. They now believe in whatever faux constitutional gibberish, and tortured logic that will allow THEIR team to win. Screw democracy, that's only something that 'the Democrat Party' supports...)

It's a story that deserves a remake to underscore the potential for a fascist coup. Republicans have dropped all pretense to being loyal to constitution. That want a 1 Party state, run by themselves. Power and personal wealth over what's good for the rest of this country.

Did you read the book? It was quite good, as well. Had a slightly different ending. President Lyman confronts Scott with the confession letter from Admiral Barnswell. Scott agrees to call off the coup if Lyman destroys the letter. Lyman agrees, and Scott leaves.

On the way out of the White House, Senator Clark and the Secretary of State catch up to Scott, and wave the perverted love letters in front of him, and basically say "Lyman may be too much of a gentleman to publish these letters about your affair, but WE'RE not! So just watch your step."

Hah! Loved that part.

We were both very influenced by it. This was in Dallas the year after JFK was assassinated. I think that I did read the book.

Thank God that Trump did not have the support of the military that General James Mattoon Scott had. Our democracy IS very fragile.
