Stephen Colbert - Rep. Jackie Speier On Surviving The Insurrection

"I Was Fearful We Were Going To Lose Our Lives" - Rep. Speier On Surviving The Insurrection

Congresswoman Jackie Speier describes her experience in the U.S. Capitol during the domestic terror attack and draws a parallel between cult leader Jim Jones and the previous president.

"We're Supposed To Forget We Almost Lost Democracy?" - Rep. Jackie Speier

Congresswoman Jackie Speier isn't ready to let anyone off the hook for the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and disagrees with her GOP colleagues who would like to move on.

It boggles the mind to remember all the outrageous transgressions that Trump has committed in the past 4-5 years! Morning Joe is currently talking about how Trump has been removed from "social media." IMO, most of the damage has already been done. If only he'd been blocked a year ago - or removed when he was rightfully impeached - so many lives would have been saved.

all the norms that Pendejo45's administration violated.
They started when he got sworn in. It was just supposed to be a story piece,
but more norms continued to be violated, that they kept track over the 4 years.

Here is that article.

Scary stuff. Ot but entertainment related - As I told you, I am watching Vice. Christian Bale has humanized Cheney way too much. Colbert's Cartoon President was criticized for humanizing Trump.

I don't see a way around that - if you play these GOP nutbags (Trump, Cheney etc.) exactly as they actually are it would seem like a caricature.

But it is a walk down memory lane. I had started forgetting how lunatic the Bush administration had been.

And I do remember thinking at least he was a good father - until he let down Mary in favor of Liz's ambitions. I wonder what he thinks of what Liz is doing now?

And I can see all of them as caricatures, and in real life not at all good for the country. But the big difference is that Bush*/Cheney aren't making headlines anymore, they realized their time was over. But not so for Trump, he's desperate to remain in power and create headlines - and further destroying this country in the process. And I see him as a much bigger danger because of that. We are experiencing yet another 9/11 over and over, hear that daily on the news.

Nikki Haley is full of Shite.. she should always be remembered just for this.. that she thinks nothing of trump being responsible for a Capitol Policeman being beaten to death by trump's cult & his followers Storming the Capitol to Overturn a Fair & Legit Election.

Excellent on Hillary, too Remind the Country & those MFs who they are.

Any effort to downplay the fact that members of Congress weren't in imminent danger from this violent crowd is disproven by her harrowing first person account of her experiences. And it's even more affecting since we know her background - she's been there before and knows what imminent danger feels like.

This can't have been easy, but I think Colbert handled it well. Her account is not one that we can take lightly. With all that we have seen and heard, what does it take to get every single American to take this seriously?? People died that day and others came close. The more experiences we hear, the worse it gets. And there needs to be accountability so that it can never happen again.

I looked up more about the Jonestown Massacre just now. I heard about it at the time, of course.. but not much since.

Only reading people talking about "..drinking the koolaid... ".. knowing it refers that.

What an incredibly strong woman she is.. and only a Congresswoman since 2008.

Here's a pic of Rep Jackie Speier in 1978..

in the world.

There was a Congressman early on who told his perspective.. he called his wife to say he loved her(can you imagine how scared she was?! & all the Loved ones!).. & he had been in the military, too.. he thought he might have to fight again... That was riveting!.. but I can't remember who he was right now. you might know!

And they said that many of them were calling loved ones in case they didn't survive the mob insurrection attack, the danger at the time was that grave. The one who sticks in my mind was Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman - who had survived cancer, but ended up with Covid-19 after sheltering during the attack in a crowded room with Republicans who refused to wear masks even though they were offered.

Unfortunately, though I'm fortunate to have good senators, I'm stuck with one of the worst Reps - Elise Stefanik, who has only gotten worse and more extreme over time. There have been protests against her since she first assumed office, but she keeps getting back in. And I learned earlier this week that a young local guy participated in the attack on the Capitol and is now in deep trouble, made the front page of the local paper. So they really are everywhere...

Rep & obviously red district. Sorry about the majority of your district thinking it's okay to storm the Capitol & beat a policeman to death.

Is that local guy going to get charged? Was he inside the Capitol Building?

I guess they thought that Trump would be waiting to welcome them!

Glens Falls man charged in U.S. Capitol intrusion arraigned on Wednesday
https://www.democraticunderground.com/106825956

And this wasn't always a red district. We elected Kirsten Gillibrand in 2006 and when our Senator Clinton became Obama's Secretary of State, Gillibrand was appointed by Governor Paterson to take her place. So there was a special election for her seat and I worked on her handpicked successor's campaign. Scott Murphy was not only a terrific candidate, but he was local, lives with his family about 10 minutes from me!

He won the special election, but lost reelection - and in 2015 we were redistricted, became part of NY-21 from up north. And their long-time congressman was a moderate Democrat, Bill Owens - but unfortunately he decided to retire and then we got stuck with Stefanik. I know that protesters follow her everywhere she goes, has happened since her first term. I don't know anyone personally who's voted for her, at the last protest I attended (family separations) I ran into 7 people I knew!

your District!

I'll never forget Glen Falls.. that's where my sister took her daughter to a chiropractor when she was 15 & she decided that what's she wanted to be when she grew up.

She's now a successful chiropractor in Manhattan & Connecticut.. & a Democrat!
