(7,715 posts)These days, I have much more confidence in things, but the humorous stuff is still incredibly great. For the last several years, it was our only lifeline!
Thank you again, dear one!

(206,123 posts)I stopped watching the news during the 2016 campaign when it was all-Trump, all-the-time, planned to tune again after the election - but we all know how that turned out. And I figured that a lot of DUers felt much the same, so I started posting the late night political guys that I watch. TexasTowelie got on board posting Jimmy Kimmel so we get all the news, with humor!

(7,715 posts)Loads of fun to be in the live audience.
But my faves Colbert and Trevor are all in the East Coast. Our children got us tix for them, but we couldn't make it. Next time, though, we will go. After the pandemic hit, I realize more than ever you have to make the most out of whatever time you have. Like Nike says, just do it.
But seriously, R, thank you so much for your extreme diligence in posting SNL, Colbert, and Trevor, which are our faves, without fail and like clockwork. I know I never have to miss these or set the DVR as you are on the job! You are an exemplary DUer in every sense.
Happy Valentine's Day!

(206,123 posts)And I've had the privilege of being in a studio audience twice - back when they had such things! I was able to see both David Letterman and Jon Stewart's Daily Show back in 2008. I am in New York, but nowhere the City.
But I have to say that I was extremely impressed with both of them. David Letterman was extremely welcoming, came out and answered questions before the show and then came out afterwards just to thank everyone for coming - after 30+ years! The guest was Dr. Phil, not my first choice, LOL, but the experience was definitely worth it. The studio is a lot smaller than it appears on TV and we had 5th row seats right in front of his desk.
As for Jon Stewart, that was a bit tougher with metal detectors and such, but he was also gracious, also took audience questions. A woman sitting near me asked about the notes he uses during the show - and he remembered, gave them to her afterwards, quite a souvenir! That guest was Judd Apatow which we didn't find out till we got there. It was my guess that he needed a guest that night so asked a friend to step in.
And wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day, too, my friend! With the hearts here this week, it's definitely improved the mood, the timing couldn't have been better!

(7,715 posts)My all-time fave.
It's funny how many shows are produced on the West Coast. However, the best late night comedy shows are almost all from the East Coast.
I would much rather have it reversed! Many great moment from Letterman. Here are two of my very favorites from the 1980s:

(206,123 posts)Another one I remember was when he immersed himself in a tank of Alka-Seltzer!
For my job, I was responsible for the CBS listings for the newspapers so I dealt with the Letterman show daily and kept track of the guests. He's always been a favorite of mine, as well.
And my one exposure to Trump before the 2016 election was when he appeared on Letterman's show. I remember that I wasn't interested in this jerk of a guest and almost changed the channel, but I stuck with it long enough to see Dave put bigot Trump in his place - Dave, who always insisted he knew nothing about politics!

(7,715 posts)Dave dissected trump. And trump was totally defenseless to the point that he changed the subject to Iraq (the one sane thing that trump said was we never should have gone to war in Iraq...I will give him credit for that specific point, which I heard from no other R).
In watching this video, if you substituted (a) 9/11 for January 6; (b) the World Trade Center towers for the Capitol; and (c) the Al Qaeda terrorists with our homegrown domestic terrorists, think how interesting that discussion would have been between Dave and trump!
And I loved the Dave/Alka Seltzer skit! I also have to say the chemistry between Dave and Paul Shaffer was fab. The only other one that I know of that would have been comparable was Carson/McMahon, and Ed wasn't a musician (I guess the real comparable would have been Johnny, Ed, and Doc Severinsen).
(and the no capital t in "trump" is deliberate....that's they way I will refer to him from now on: he's not worthy of capital letters!)
