(111,359 posts)but this looks like a pretty big eruption instead of the throat clearing of last year.
Catania is a fairly big city SSE of the volcano, about 25 miles away, far enough to be safe from the big stuff but certainly close enough to collect tephra.
Somehow, I think most real estate any closer than that has become unattractive over the last year, no matter how great the soil is for grapes and olives.

We also had one near Pinatubo. It's gone.

I once had a harrowing ride up it with a Sicilian driver (2 words that should never be put together ever). The first time we encountered snow and our driver didn't know about driving in snow and we slid down and I thought my time on earth was about to expire. The driver kept calling us "pazzi." Crazy.
