No, the Founders did not create the filibuster, but Manchin is absolutely correct to say that our Founders insisted upon protecting the rights of the minority—specifically, the right of people to own other human beings as slaves. Yes. We wouldn’t have our Constitution if this essential compromise was not made in 1787. We, the People, of the United States WILL PROTECT minority rights (even when those “rights” are in direct opposition to our founding ideals), and the Senate has been, historically, the mechanism by which said minority rights have been protected. Manchin is right about that.

That said, I am of the opinion that the filibuster has outlived its usefulness. I think we should abolish it in its entirety. If Republicans are so fond of it, they will be welcome to reinstate it when they next control the Senate.

a system where to win you need 10 points more than the looser. No, Manchin is not correct, he is not protecting the rights of any minority he is, like always, pandering to republicans, "his republican friends". When have republicans help pass legislation in the past 20 years?, when have republicans, again in the past 20 years, have been willing to work with Democrats?

A lot of people really need to start reading political history of the USA, republicans have always been what they are today, the only difference is that they were less loud, but they have always been partisan, they have always been pro-rich, pro-corporations- anti-people, racists, etc. There is not difference to republicans then and now besides the fact they worked their evil deeds more behind the scenes in the past and now they don't care, they do it in front of everyone.

No, Manchin is not right. Was he protecting the people when he refused to vote for the stimulus? No, he needed to negotiate, get his way through, and he is really enjoying his role as the deal breaker, all this attention.

Sorry, but F him!

This concept of minority is purely political.

The Senate was never designed to protect a political party it was a compromise on states rights.

This I have said before.
The small states already have a weight advantage in the Senate.
Adding the filibuster allows a minority of states representing a very small minority of the population to control the agenda of the Senate.
The republicans are currently more in favor in the smaller states and with the filibuster this gives them an unreasonable political advantage.

He emphasizes 50 -- he knows he can be the 50th and get to swing the vote

He is delusional if he thinks the Republicans are not unified in opposition.

then why does he empower the party of white nationalists by giving them the filibuster, in effect a veto on legislation that protects minority rights, among other things?

NOT 1 single one of his Republican 'friends' as he calls them voted for the Covid Relief Act, For me personally, March the 14th it will be my 1 year anniversary since I even HAD had a paying gig. Do the Republicans think that only Democrats are out of work and need help?
Also, I watched all of these Democrats who were so concerned after getting elected with Howard Dean's 50 state strategy in the House lose all the seats they gained by playing this "we need to be bi-partisan" game. It doesn't work, the republicans still will NEVER vote for a Dem and the Dems lose interest in voting FOR wishy washy candidates.
