....he was estranged from the family although my father maintained some contact with him over the years.

From what I hear, he was nothing like my father.

Lindberg tried to join Air Corp. FDR refused request. Lindberg hung out with the pilots but was never officially in service.

....with flying, and he was my childhood hero. Of course I knew nothing about his dark side, just his heroics in the 1920s.

A sad story all around.

those quiet, heroic types sometimes, lol. My mom was brought up during Lindy's worldwide fame tour and regarded him as a valiant pioneer and hero. Fortunately she didn't live to learn the real truth about Lucky Lindy.

The Plot Against America. It was pretty good. The book was a bit different (same name) and I really enjoyed it.
