(22,672 posts)Have you ever driving past one of these type remote desolate rural areas on Earth? Nobody goes outside. They huddle indoors watching TV. And at -40* all the time, who would go outside anyways!
My impression of taking on such an ambition as colonizing the red planet falls into two categories. Someone who wants to be known for helping bring the planet back to life and change its living conditions. Or someone who realizes they're imprisoning themselves on another planet where everything they do is cumbersome, are exposing themselves to lethal amounts of solar radiation and are fine with all that, i.e. superhuman or crazy.

(111,359 posts)That Martian dust is irritating to the skin, poisonous if ingested or inhaled. People will need to have their suits decontaminated before it's safe to get out of them, something they missed in "The Martian."
While I can see mining perchlorates as a viable enterprise using Mars as a way station to mining asteroids, I can't honestly see any human beings coping with that environment to do so. Robots will have to get stuck with the job.
