(9,959 posts)... loved this story. I thought it was interesting that Matthew's mother had a doctorate... I once thought of anti-vac as "uneducated" as in level of education... but I have a friend with post-grad teaching credentials that still has not decided to get her vaccine. She is cagey about why... not a Trump fan, but she has an autistic son; that may be the reason. I will have to see if she saw Lawrence's show!

And it baffles me why anyone would be vaccine reluctant at this point - on MSNBC tonight they said it's far from over. People may be ready to move on and just go back to "normal," but it was reported that there are still 30,000 new cases every day.

(9,959 posts)... hopefully, we can get more people to get the vaccine. If enough people refuse, the virus will have a greater chance to mutate; this leads to a greater chance of variations that can beat the vaccines... If enough people in Mississippi or Alabama refuse, a virus variant could start there and we're back in the pandemic... I am optimistic, though!

(205,510 posts)Though not nearly as much as before I was vaccinated - which I was afraid would never happen. The vaccine took awhile to be available here in Northeastern New York. I only knew two friends who got it early, one who works in the hospital ER who had to drive downstate to a major hospital and another who teaches who had to drive across the entire state!
But then pharmacies started offering them, that's when I got mine. And now we have a state site in the old Sears store at the nearby local mall which is doing a brisk business and started accepting walk-ins 3 weeks ago. And that's when I convinced my reluctant brother to get his. Tomorrow I'm taking him back to get Pfizer shot #2!

(11,949 posts)He was a democrat but till the day he died Im not sure he believed in evolution.
I learned from him that highly educated people learn about a very narrow field of knowledge. Once he was done with his sophomore year I doubt he ever had another science class. And this was in the 50s when we did not know much science compared to now.
The wife and I both have science degrees. Granted only BS degrees. But both in the life science. We know and understand what DNA is and how it works. We had a strong understanding of science from very good universities. Hers even better than mine.
We have had multiple conversations that the last year has been the most useful in the 35+ years since we graduated for our degrees. Because we understand the scientific principles. And more basically, trust it.

(205,510 posts)And I'm also grateful to the good doctor - she has saved millions of lives. And I got a kick out of learning that Dr. Fauci got the Moderna vaccine, too!
Speaking of vaccines, I just took my brother for his second Pfizer shot today. He isn't anti vax, just vax reluctant. But I managed to talk him into it when they opened up a nearby state-run site in the old Sears store at the nearby mall. When started accepting walk-ins, I persuaded my brother to go, guess he must have gotten sick of my nagging, LOL.
And today I was pleased to see that they're still doing a booming business! Older people, families, and while I was waiting outside I saw a couple of kids come out with their moms and pose for a photo outside - so the 12-15 year-olds are now getting vaccinated, too!

(205,510 posts)Dr. Fauci said to get whatever was available to you first, so that's what I got, managed to get an appointment a little south of here at CVS. And I was kinda tickled to learn that Dr. Fauci got the Moderna, too!
