As if the Mexican Army is poised on the border ready to attack.
All a border specifies is the geographical boundary where the political sovereignty and administrative authority begins for one state and ends for another. That's all. This is arranged by treaty or any kind of legal agreement between parties.
The concept of borders is relatively recent. The only boundaries that had ever existed were natural ones; mountains, rivers, forests, etc. That all changed after the Thirty Years War and the Treaties of Westphalia which began the concept of nation-states and international relations. The basic takeaway from all of this was; the religion of the state should reflect the religion of the ruler and other countries would respect their sovereignty within those agreed upon borders without interference.
So someone "crossing the border" is essentially meaningless; people cross borders every day. State borders, city borders, town and county borders all sorts of imaginary and subjective lines that exist only on maps.
So that leaves citizenship. Well, that's a matter for Immigration and Naturalization. It's an absurdity that attaining citizenship is such a long and drawn out byzantine process. Not to mention the racist policies of the past (and present) of limiting immigrants from non Western European countries and an outright ban on Asian Immigration from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century.
What frightens today's right wing Republican is the fact that white supremacy is going "bye-bye" due to changing demographics.
But that was to be expected. Europeans who identify as "white" are not indigenous to this hemisphere. In fact, they're not only a minority here but also a minority population on this planet. White Europeans through colonization and genocidal policies became dominant in this hemisphere. But over time, birthrates and demographics became destiny. And now populations are reverting back to the norm and whites are finding themselves outnumbered and soon to be a minority by mid century. And it's freaking them out.
So, to hold off the eventuality of the loss of status and power they're reverting to voter suppression tactics and trying to use fear of immigrants as a weak attempt to hold on to power. But even that only delays the inevitable by about 5-10 years. Barring a massive influx of immigration from European and Norwegian countries (And why would they want to come here when their societies are clearly better?) those whites will indeed be replaced.
The main danger they pose now is that they're likely to resort to violence and attempt to overthrow the government as the Fascist blackshirts in Italy and the Nazi brownshirts in Germany. Something that I do not put beyond them.
Therefore, we must prepare for such a possibility and plan on physical resistance to these proto Nazis who favor white supremacy over democracy.
