Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have created an independent and bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot that left five people dead and about 140 officers injured. By a vote of 54 to 35, the Senate failed to advance the commission.

(3,166 posts)There were 48 Dem/Ind votes in favor, along with 6 Republicans.
11 Senators did not vote. Two Dems (Murray and Sinema) and 9 Republicans. The 35 votes against were all Republicans.

(3,166 posts)To a lot of people reading that, it sounds like it was voted against 54 - 35, instead of that there were 54 votes IN FAVOR of it. Anything that gets 54 votes should proceed. The whole Senate setup is just ludicrous.
This wasn't even the bill about establishing the commission, right? This was the motion to proceed to debating about setting it up.
Makes me want to scream and throw things!
In the vote itself, 11 Senators didn't vote. All of the Dems who voted, voted in favor. Patty Murray and Sinema did not vote, so there would have hopefully been 56 votes in favor if they had. 9 Republicans did not vote, including my own Senator, Burr, who is retiring and doesn't have to face voters again. Ugh.

Thanks Raygun for busting the Unions and forcing the party to crawl in bed with corporate sugar folks.
And thanks to those Dems mostly past but some still present who walked away from the Party's Middle Class roots by not standing up very strongly for Unions - the very middle class voters who drove progressive reforms over the last 40 years.
We made Our bed now we must either wash the sheets or lie in the filth.
